Loose Exchanges: V Mix CD 2005
- "Wouldn't It Be Nice" - The Beach Boys [someone a bit derranged] So many different sounds and so many great little moments in the course of one pop song.
- "Devil in Mexico" - Murder by Death My sister introduced me to this band. Murky, southern gothic. The devil shot in a dingy bar. "Dealin' insults with his free hand in this hospital bed bleedin'."
- "High Water (For Charley Patton)" - Bob Dylan The rhythms of this song make it for me. Dylan has found a great persona and style to match his older, gravely voice.
- "Time (Clock of the Heart) (live)" - Culture Club [guilty pleasure] It's got a great bass line, smooth vocals, a little clean rhythm guitar, crossdressing, etc.
- "Tiger Tiger" - Duran Duran [Instrumental] This is somewhat of a consolation prize for Duran Duran, since they didn't get the Guilty Pleasure spot. Also, most of the other Instrumental pieces that would be in the running were prog-rock, and nothing kills a mix CD deader than a 10 minute Rush instrumental.
- "The Constant Lover" - Magneta Lane I dig their modernized New Wave sound.
- "Fastlove" - George Michael [gay disco] Too on the nose? I could have gone with "Outside".
- "Our Prayer / Gee" - Brian Wilson [genius intro] Almost a cheat, since Our Prayer is basically all intro.
- "Moonage Daydream" - David Bowie [outer space] FREAK OUT!
- "Backstabbers / King Horse" (live) - Elvis Costello That's the O'Jays that EC is covering in the first section of this track. The second section is the source for the title of this mix.
- "Waiting Under The Waves"- Kris Delmhorst Kris is a local favorite singer/songwriter type out of Boston.
- "Clear Blue Sky" - Corey Heaslip Another local artist, Corey does some excellent indie rock, and this song is a great example. I love the layered guitars at the end.
- "Walkin' Blues" - Robert Johnson [older than me]
- "Gather" (live) - Glen Phillips A riveting solo acoustic number from the former Toad the Wet Sprocket frontman. Recorded live at the Middle East in Cambridge, MA
- "Babylon Sisters" - Steely Dan Is there a smoother song?
- "A Love You Can't Survive" - Richard Thompson My favorite guitarist. This song just builds to an amazing, searing crescendo.
- "King of the Jailhouse" - Aimee Mann Okay, maybe one "ending" song too many, but I don't think I could lose any of them. Driving off into the sunset.
- "It's a Sin (to Tell a Lie)" - Brent Spiner (bonus track) Yes, that's Patrick Stewart in the middle section, with Levar Burton, Michael Dorn, and Jonathan Frakeson on backing vocals.
