Rhino began their latest Elvis Costello re-release program this week with
My Aim is True,
Spike, and
All This Useless Beauty. These are the CD equivalent of the collector's edition DVD. Each comes with a supplemental disc packed with demo versions, b-sides and other related tracks. There are also extensive new liner notes penned by Costello, reflecting on the writing and recording processes for the album.
I've had the idea for a while that it would be cool to have an album released with both the fully-produced and stripped-down versions of the same songs. It turns out that I was right, it is pretty damn cool. Costello himself notes in the liner for Spike that some listeners might prefer the demo tracks.
